Five defining moments in qualification for the Socceroos
5. The Tim and Archie show
The Socceroos were winless after three games in the fourth round of qualifying and had suffered a humiliating loss to Jordan a month earlier. A culture of concern was beginning to fester by the time Australia arrived in Qatar to face Iraq in October, 2012, and nothing but a win would stop the rot. But a goal by Iraq's Alaa Abdul-Zahra in the 72nd minute looked to have heaped more pressure on the heads of the Socceroos, until Australia's saviour extraordinaire Tim Cahill yet again came to the rescue with a headed goal from a corner kick eight minutes later. Four minutes after that, Archie Thompson glanced a headed into the back of the net to give the Socceroos a stirring victory and belief in their ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The dual flag-punchingcelebration routine by Thompson and Cahill after the former's goal is surely one of the most joyous Socceroos moments in recent years.
