How Manchester United won the title
|HOW THEY ENDED SEPTEMBER
The Dutchman hit a first hat-trick for his new team as United came from behind in a thriller to beat Southampton 3-2.
A routine victory over Wigan at Old Trafford followed and set United up nicely for a trip to Anfield to face bitter rivals Liverpool.
Again Van Persie was the man of the moment, keeping his nerve to slot home an 81st minute penalty and seal a 2-1 win on an emotional afternoon on Merseyside as Liverpool played their first game after the findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel.
Yet just a week later and with the season still in its infancy, United lost their second game of the season as Tottenham ended a 23-year wait to taste victory at Old Trafford with a 3-2 win in a thrilling game.
Manchester City, meanwhile, went through the month without a single defeat. Victories over QPR and Fulham coupled with draws at home to Arsenal and away to Stoke left them unbeaten but still four points behind early pace-setters Chelsea.
