The Malaysia captain played a key role in the defending champions' run to the semi-final, as he put in some industrious performances in the middle of the park. Recovering from a muted outing in the opening 3-0 defeat to Singapore, Safiq led by example in the second match against Laos as curled in a lovely freekick to give Malaysia the lead in a 4-1 victory. He then helped them seal qualification to the next round with a 2-0 win over Indonesia, although he could not prevent them from bowing out to Thailand in the semi-finals.
