USMNT roster: Pulisic sits out as McKennnie and Weah headline U.S. squad for Brazil and Mexico matches

A young 24-man squad has been called into the U.S. national team's upcoming camp ahead of friendlies against Brazil and Mexico, but Christian Pulisic isn't part of the group.

The Borussia Dortmund winger was recently sidelined by what his club identified as a "muscular injury" that kept him out of Dortmund's 0-0 draw with Hannover 96 on Friday. On Sunday, U.S. Soccer announced that Pulisic was not called in for the team's upcoming friendlies, saying only that the injury was "not significant".

Pulisic will now have missed six of the national team's past seven matches since the team's World Cup 2018 qualifying debacle against Trinidad and Tobago last October.

“I was excited to have Christian be a part of these games in September. As we all know too well, injuries happen and you can never predict timing," USMNT caretaker coach Dave Sarachan said.

"It’s disappointing that we won’t have Christian involved. I know that he wanted to be a part of things and we certainly wanted him here, but unfortunately he won’t be available.

“That said, we haven’t had Christian in with the group aside from one game in the past six friendlies, so I feel confident that this group will continue to build on what we have started.”

Though Pulisic will miss the September 7 friendly against Brazil at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and the September 11 friendly against Mexico at LP Field in Tennessee, Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are among the bigger names that have answered the call for the friendlies.

Sarachan has stuck with the youth movement he has taken the team through since replacing Bruce Arena as coach, calling in a 24-man group light on veterans, though some familiar faces are returning after having been away all of 2018.

John Brooks, Kellyn Acosta and Sebastian Lletget are all taking part in their first national team camps of the year. Brooks and Lletget were absent in large part because of injury issues, while a combination of his former team not releasing him and his own struggles to find form at FC Dallas had kept Acosta out of the mix after what looked like a breakout 2017.

Brooks has enjoyed a stellar start to the new Bundesliga season, helping Wolfsburg open with two victories, while Acosta has flourished with the Colorado Rapids since being traded away by FC Dallas.

Here is the USMNT squad in full that will begin camp on Monday in New Jersey:
