Sudan join Morocco in Chan quarters after crucial win

Sudan joined Morocco in the quarter-finals of Chan 2018 after the fought their way to a vital 1-0 win over Mauritania on Wednesday night.

Hosts Morocco were the first to qualify after beating Guinea 3-1 with Ayoub El Kaabi notching a perfect hat-trick for the Atlas Lions as they registered their second straight victory in the competition.

Sudan had beaten Guinea in their opener and dominated the match against Mauritania. Sudan made the break through on the half-hour mark when Eldin latched onto a through ball into the area before rifling beyond the keeper.

The second-half failed to produce the excitement of the opening 45 minutes with Sudan holding on for the win.

Sudan occupy second place behind hosts Morocco on goal difference, while Guinea and Mauritania follow in third and fourth place respectively.

The final Group A matches are set for Sunday with Morocco playing against Sudan in Casablanca to decide the pool winners, while in Marrakech, Guinea will face Mauritania.

With the second consecutive defeat in the tournament, Guinea, which played the semi-finals of the Chan 2016 in Rwanda, stands no chances to qualify for the second round.

The tournament, which is for African footballers based in their own domestic leagues, features 16 teams divided into four groups.
