Scholes: Man Utd need 'special' Bale or Neymar

Manchester United need to be in the market for "special" talents such as Gareth Bale and Neymar, says Paul Scholes.

The Red Devils finished as runners-up in the Premier League and FA Cup in 2017-18, but were ultimately left empty-handed to leave Jose Mourinho facing up to another rebuilding job .

He is expected to be busy in the next transfer window, with comings and goings aplenty being mooted at Old Trafford.

Scholes believes United need to be spending big in an effort to close the gap on their domestic and European rivals, with some of Europe's biggest names having been linked with the club.

In his eyes, that means making approaches for the likes of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale – who has hinted at a move on the back of his Champions League final heroics – and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar.

The former Red Devils midfielder told the Daily Mail : “If he [Jose Mourinho] can change something through the summer, buy new players and he can find a way of playing that maybe is a little bit more entertaining then who knows, you don't know.

“A lot can happen over the summer. Let's hope we can get close again.

“We need some good attacking players. I think the nucleus of the squad is quite good, there's some really good young attacking players.

“I think he possibly needs a bit of help with [Romelu] Lukaku. He seems like the only out-and-out centre-forward he's got.

“It's hard to know what's available, would Gareth Bale be available? People like Neymar, will they be available? I don't know. These are the type of special players that I think United need.”

United seemingly need players of that ilk if they are to make more of an impression in Europe next season following a a last-16 exit at the hands of Sevilla in 2017-18.

Scholes added: “They'll have to improve massively to get anywhere near a final I think with the amount of top teams that are in the competition now, they don't look anywhere close to that at the minute.”
