Delwinder: Nomination will spur me on

The defender has had a rough season with Geylang International by his admission and is pleased with the Goal Singapore Awards nod for Young Player of the Year
2013 has not been the smoothest of years for Delwinder Singh, who has seen his season disrupted by injuries after making the move to Geylang International from Tanjong Pagar United.

However, the versatile defender, who can play across the back-line as well as in defensive midfield, has bounced back to put in impressive performances. That has led to him being nominated in the Young Playerof the Year category in the inaugural Goal Singapore Football Awards, which he described as an "honour".

"It's an honour to be nominated for this prestigious award," he told Goal Singapore. "To make it more honourable is the fact that I am being nominated with some of the finest talents that the country has produced."

The 21-year-old will be up against the likes of Faris Ramli, Shahfiq Ghani, Adam Swandi, Shakir Hamzah and Sahil Suhaimi and stated that the recognition will make him more determined to be a better player.

"It will surely spur me on to achieve greater things and also to work hard at every given opportunity, be it in training or matches," he added. "It will be a tough task to win the award, but may the best player win!"

Indeed, there is no doubting Delwinder's ability to soldier on, having suffered a broken nose and then a knee injury this season.

"It has been a rough season with lots of ups and downs," he said.

"I was out for a month with a broken nose and merely a month upon returning, I sustained a meniscus tear, which roughly sums up the season.

"But having said that, I would like to thank my family, physios, club management, fans, coaches and those who have helped me for always being there for me and being supportive throughout the season."

Delwinder also travelled with the Singapore team to Tehran, Iran for their recent 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Syria, which they lost 4-0.

"It was a great opportunity being there, having gained advice from senior players and it was also an eye opening experience for the Asian qualifiers," he recalled.

Delwinder, who will be plying his trade at a new club next season having left the Eagles, already made his Lions debut during his time at the Jaguars, although he was not named in the provisional squad for the SEA Games next month.
