The 2013 IG Masters Football Sixes Singapore Cup is expected to be an exciting affair after Series director Steve Black laid out the plans for the event.
At the press conference on Wednesday at Marriott Hotel, Black was happy to be able to bring back the masterclass event to the city-state after last year’s successful inaugural edition.
“Following the successful launch of the Singapore Masters Cup last October, we are really delighted to be back here again for what should be an even better indoor football tournament featuring more of our indoor sporting heroes,” Black said.
The indoor-tournament will see teams competing in a six-a-side format for pride, glory and silverware on October 20.
Teams formed will comprise ex-players from Manchester United, Liverpool, an English Premier League (EPL) All-Stars team and Singapore, with the host country looking to go one step further this year after narrowly missing out on the title last year in a 5-3 loss to the All-Stars in the final.
Black promised that a more star-studded line up will be announced this year with players such as Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler among those expected to participate in the tournament, despite the final team list not being decided upon.
“Joining Paul [Parker] in the United team, [we] will have Lee Sharpe, Ronny Johnsen; for Liverpool with Stephane [Henchoz], we are expecting Robbie Fowler and Dietmar Hamann to be playing,” Black said.
“We will announce the full team lists a month before the event but we are expecting all that has been mentioned, [which means] even better players than last year, and it should be a very exciting tournament."
Due to the popularity of the Singapore Masters Series last year, Black has urged the public to buy the tickets as soon as possible, especially with the salivating line-up expected this year.
“We are expecting a full house and we will encourage the public to buy the tickets early to avoid any disappointment in missing out,” he said.
