Hundreds of names from all corners of the world were considered for the Goal 50 award and three Asian players made the final list. Goal's Bhas Kunju lists his Top 20 SEA players

by Bhas Kunju, Goal Singapore Chief Editor

The annual Goal 50 has been announced for 2013, and Lionel Messi tops the list once more, his third achievement since the award was started in 2008.

The top 10 is rounded off entirely by players based in Europe, with the highest ranked Asian player coming in at 39; UAE's Omar Abdul Rahman doing the continent proud after his remarkable showing at the 2012 London Olympics.

In total, just three Asian players made the final list, Japan's Hisato Sato (47) and South Korea's Lee Keun-Ho (49) joining Omar to carry the flag for Asia.

LionsXII and Singapore captain Shahril Ishak was the only South East Asian player nominated and in the running to make the Goal 50, eventually reachingg the final round of nominations. The Asean Football Federation (AFF) Player of the Year and AFF Suzuki Cup Most Valuable Player award winner missed out on the list by just a few points.

With South East Asian and Asian players in general falling short of the highly competitive global list, I have released my own compilation of Top 20 South East Asian players who could and should make a push to enter Goal 50 in the coming years.

Do you agree with the list? Who would you like to see in your Top 20? Let us know in our comments below.
