Singapore edged out Thailand 3-2 on aggregate despite going down 1-0 in Bangkok, Thailand to a very determined home side.

Kirati Keawsombut's solitary strike just before the half-time whistle had Singapore on their back-foot for the rest of the match but was not enough to deny history being made.

The record making victory satisfied Singapore Prime Minister who shared in the joyous occasion by Tweeting his congratulations to the national team.

"Congrats to the Lions on winning the AFF Suzuki Cup for a record 4th time!! Well done! We’re so proud of you!" read the Tweet from his official Twitter account, which was also shared on his official Facebook page.

Prime Minister Lee who is in India has been following the Lions' progress closely and shared his thoughts on social media on Wednesday night as well, saying: "Just arrived in New Delhi and connected to Channel NewsAsia. Wow! Lions won 3-1 against Thailand. Well done! Look forward to the second leg on Saturday."

The Singapore team will return on Sunday afternoon 115pm at Changi Airport Terminal 2 Arrival Hall. There will be an open-top bus parade following that with the trip ending at Jalan Besar Stadium.
