Probably one of the most consistent players for Singapore at the AFF Suzuki Cup thus far, Shahdan Sulaiman featured in all the group stage matches and was always running his lungs out, assisting his defence and supplying the ammunition to the strikers upfront.
Speaking to Goal.com ahead of their crucial semi-final clash against the Philippines, Shahdan said that the team has had to rectify their weaknesses and added that they are prepared for the game on Saturday.
“The players themselves know that we can’t afford to make that kind of mistake again," said the midfielder in reference to the horror first-half showing against Laos.
"We picked ourselves up in the second half and we knew that we had to do something.
“Everything is going well [preparations wise] and hopefully we can get results. The friendly matches against them show that we can compete with them especially the game at Cebu.
“This time around, hopefully, we can take our chances and go for a win.”
Shahdan also hope that the loss of several key players for the Azkals will be a boost for the Lions as they look to lift the cup for the fourth time in the competition history.
“These Europeans based players are tougher and without them, hopefully, they will struggle against us," he added.
"It is better for us this way."
A true Lion at heart, Shahdan feels that the two losses they suffered at the hands of the Philippines in the two previous friendly matches will drive them to do better this time round: “It does serve as a motivation to us. We could have won those game and we want to get a result this time around.”
Singapore will take on the Philippines in the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final on December 8 at the Rizal Memorial stadium in Manila. The game will be shown ‘LIVE’ on Mediacorp Channel 5 at 7.55pm.
