The Bristol Rovers goalkeeper's participation in the Suzuki Cup 2012 is in jeopardy after he was called back to England in order to provide cover for Mark Schwarzer
Neil Etheridge is unlikely to feature for Philippines in the Suzuki Cup 2012 after being recalled to English Premier League side Fulham.
The goalkeeper has spent the season so far on loan at Bristol Rovers, but has now returned to his parent club to provide cover for Mark Schwarzer following second-choice goalkeeper David Stockdale's impending loan departure to Hull City.
Etheridge was initially cleared to play in the group stages of the AFFSC 2012 before he was recalled. Although Stockdale’s departure date has not been confirmed, the Azkals’ first-choice goalkeeper is convinced he is unable to feature in the tournament.
"I can’t go because Fulham recalled me to be No. 2," Etheridge told Philippine Daily Inquirer. "It’s now impossible for me to come."
Either German second-division club Duisburg Roland Muller or veteran goalkeeper Eduard Sacapano, who saved a penalty in Philippines 1-0 win over Singapore last week will be slated to take over goalkeeping duties from Etheridge.
The majority of the Philippines squad has arrived in Bangkok, although the final 22-man roster will not be confirmed by coach Michael Weiss until he receives confirmation his players who are based aboard have been released by their club.
The Philippines will face Thailand on Sunday in the opening day for Group A, which includes Vietnam and Myanmar.
