In the wake of disappointing recent friendly results, Datuk Zolkples Embong has asked Malaysian footballers to aim for a repeat of their success in the Suzuki Cup two years ago
Defending AFF Suzuki Cup champions Malaysia must aim to keep their title, the Director General of the National Sports Council, Datuk Zolkples Embong has said.
According to him, Malaysia should not have any more excuses after winning the tournament two years ago and the football gold medal at the last South East Asian Games.
“As title holders, there's no reason for us not to aim to keep the cup,” Zolkples told reporters in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
“Results in friendlies have not been satisfying so far and many people are having doubts about the team at the moment.
“I see for myself there are plenty of improvements that need to be made because I know the players’ real capabilities.”
Zolkples however still retains hopes that the Malayan Tigers will rise to the occasion when the tournament kicks-off this weekend.
“I hope with the experience they have, the players will show what they are really capable of in the competition," he added.
“The first game against Singapore will give us an indication of how good we are.”
Malaysia start their defence of the regional title against arch-rivals Singapore on Sunday, November 25.
