League Two goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has appeared to reject a chance to represent Philippines in the AFF tournament.
The Bristol Rovers goalkeeper’s decision was confirmed by his manager Mark McGhee.
“Neil has decided he won’t be going to the tournament,” McGhee told the Bristol Post.
Etheridge’s decision seems to have delighted McGhee, after potentially missing out on six games for Bristol Rovers had he joined up with the Azkals for the tournament.
“Neil is a man in form, though, so we’re pleased we’ll have him around. He did make a catastrophic error that led to a goal on Saturday, but that was one of those things that will probably only happen once in his career,” McGhee continued
“He went on to make some great saves after that and has done really well for us since arriving from Fulham.”
Etheridge is currently on-loan from Fulham till the end of December, and has made 11 appearances for Bristol Rovers this season.
Etheridge has also been capped 38 times by Philippines and was slated to be first-choice goalkeeper for the Azkals in the Suzuki Cup 2012.
