Hofmann targets Dortmund starring role

The attacking protege aims to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s side after Sunday’s game-changing cameo against Eintracht Braunschweig
Jonas Hofmann has vowed to become a Borussia Dortmund star following his super-sub performance at the weekend.

The 21-year-old winger was summoned from the bench with BVB struggling to break down an obdurate Braunschweig outfit, and made an instant impact by scoring within 10 minutes of his arrival.

Not content with registering his first senior goal for Die Schwarzgelben, Hofmann was soon felled in the box following a jinking run – allowing Marco Reus to convert the resulting penalty to propel last season’s runners-up to the top of the Bundesliga table.

But speaking to Bild, the former Hoffenheim youngster is keen to make up for lost time, he said: “There was never any question of me leaving Dortmund.

“I am optimistic, and I must hope now I stay injury free and get my chance again.

“The game could not have gone any better. The fact I scored in front of the Sudtribune made it even hotter. I could hardly sleep after the game!”

The display capped a remarkable rise for the Germany Under-21 international, who was plucked from Hoffenheim’s reserves for the modest sum of just €100,000 (£85,600) in the summer of 2011.

Hofmann had to wait until the closing stages of the 2012-13 season before making his first-team debut for Dortmund, and there were even suggestions the player would be sold during pre-season.

Certainly the early season form of the young winger has lessened the blow of losing Mario Gotze to arch-rivals Bayern Munich.

Coach Jurgen Klopp acted quickly in replacing Gotze with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to his squad, with Hofmann also being viewed as a new recruit to Signal Iduna Park.

Sporting director Michael Zorc described Hofmann as a "fourth signing" and praised his contribution so far.

He added: “He took his goal with class. He has been outstanding so far. It was the right decision to pull him up to the first team squad."
