The former Roten boss has nothing but admiration and respect for the ex-Barcelona man and believes his devotion to learning German will be crucial to his successBayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola for his "humility and commitment".
The current Switzerland boss, who spent a total of seven years in charge of the Bavarians, believes that his former employers have hired a man of impeccable character.
"I've met him at coaches' meetings," Hitzfeld revealed in an interview with Bild. "He is a very likeable fellow: open and honest, with a very respectful approach.
"And from his first appearance [as Bayern boss], he exemplified what he also requires of his players: a humility and commitment towards Bayern.
"That he already speaks German speaks volumes for his character. It is also a huge advantage, in order to be able to talk to players directly, but also understand the media.
"Others, such as [Giovanni] Trapattoni or [Nevio] Scala failed because they did not speak the language."
Guardiola has succeeded Jupp Heynckes at the helm of the Bavarians, after taking a year-long sabbatical from the game following a hugely successful four-season stint with Barcelona.
