Following Roberto Martinez's move to Everton on Wednesday, the Latics chief executive is not expecting to wait too long before naming the Spaniard's replacement

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan expects to finalise the appointment of a new manager as early as next week.

Previous boss Roberto Martinez was officially unveiled at Everton on Wednesday, leaving the Latics in search of a replacement capable of guiding the FA Cup winners back into the Premier League following their relegation.

Whelan previously stated that as many as 50 applicants had put their names forward for the job, with former England boss Steve McClaren thought to figure prominently in the reckoning, and will begin the interview process at the weekend.

"I'm in Jersey now until Saturday and then we've got the grand opening of the Wigan boys and girls club, which will be a really special occasion," Whelan told the Daily Mirror.

"Then on Sunday and Monday, we will start interviews to fill the position.

"I'm not going to sort of mess about too long. I expect it to be done in four or five days."
