Sherwood backs Soldado to shine at Tottenham

The striker has scored just five times in the Premier League this season, with just one in his last 10 outings, but the Spaniard's manager is buoyed by his application in training
Tim Sherwood has backed Roberto Soldado to come good at Tottenham after struggling for goals since a big-money summer arrival.

The striker cost Spurs £26 million during the close-season after scoring 59 goals in just 101 Liga appearances for Valencia, but has notched just five times in the league this term.

Soldado is currently on a run of just one goal in his last 10 Premier League outings, but Sherwood remains confident in the 28-year-old's ability, insisting he just needs time to settle into Tottenham's style.

"I see him every day in training and he has a great mentality," Sherwood told reporters. "He keeps working on his game.

"I think he is a goal away from getting back his confidence and going on those goalscoring runs, just like he did for Valencia. He played in a front three [in Spain]. It was a different brand of football.

"He is certainly not lacking in desire or character. He is a good lad and liked in the dressing room. He would have liked to have scored more goals and hopefully we can give him the opportunity to do that."

Sherwood has had an instant impact at White Hart Lane since being handed the first-team reins following Andre Villas-Boas' sacking, winning four and drawing one of his five top-flight games in charge.

And the ex-midfielder has credited former manager Kenny Dalgish - who he won the Premier League at Blackburn with in 1995 - as key to his approach to the game, on and off the pitch.

"Obviously I get upset when we haven’t done well. But I don’t get too high on the winds. I learned that from playing under Kenny Dalglish.

"He would never talk up a player too much. He would always say: ‘When I am talking you up when you are playing well, telling people how great you are, when you are having a dip they are going to want to tell me how crap you are!’

"I talked to him about management and he gave me confidence. He said that he felt if anyone could do it, I could. Just by knowing my mentality."
