Rodgers could make Suarez Liverpool captain in Gerrard's absence

Daniel Agger is the Reds icon's regular understudy but has not nailed down a first-team place this season and the manager is "100 per cent" confident in the striker's suitability

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers could make Luis Suarez captain against Tottenham in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

The England midfielder is set to be out until the new year with a hamstring injury while his regular understudy, vice-skipper Daniel Agger, is available but not guaranteed to start against Spurs.

Rodgers has utilised several different defensive combinations this season, with Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho all among his centre-back options, and the Reds boss refused to confirm who would start with the armband.

"Daniel Agger is fit," the Northern Irishman told the media. "He didn't train at the start of the week because he was ill but he has been training now and he's available for selection.

"We shall see who will be captain."

Suarez has been in electrifying form for Liverpool this season, scoring 15 goals in 11 appearances since returning from suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic last term, but agitated for a move to Arsenal during the summer.

Despite his controversial moments, though, Rodgers would trust the Uruguayan with the responsibility of being skipper.

"Would Luis be ready? 100 per cent, absolutely," he declared. "We will have to wait and see what my decision is at White Hart Lane. You'll see then."
