Everton boss Martinez hails super substitute Osman

The Spaniard was full of praise for the impact the England midfielder made after coming off the bench to inspire a 2-0 victory for the Toffees away to Aston Villa

Roberto Martinez labelled Leon Osman’s performance as a “masterclass” after his second half display produced a goal and assist to send Everton up to third.

Osman had to settle for a place on the bench for the trip to Villa Park as Steven Pienaar returned to the starting line-up. Like the South African a week earlier, Osman provided the fresh impetus needed to seal all three points for the blues.

He provided the pass to send Romelu Lukaku through on goal to put Everton ahead midway through the second half and put the game beyond doubt with a well-placed effort ten minutes from time.

The Merseyside outfit were made to work hard for their victory and also had Tim Howard to thank for an incredible penalty save from Christian Benteke.

Martinez expressed his delight at the way Osman changed the entire pattern of the game upon his introduction.

He told reporters: "He gave a masterclass of how to play in midfield, I couldn’t be prouder. Hopefully the team really benefitted from Leon Osman today.

"We have a really strong squad. All that matters now is every player is ready to help them team whenever that is.

"Today was a specific game. With the real high energy game that they have it was a good opportunity for Leon in the last 25 minutes.2

Martinez was also keen to praise the heroics of goalkeeper, Tim Howard. The American stopper produced a superb save from a Christian Benteke penalty early on and many top draw stops throughout.

He added: "Nobody deserved that clean sheet more than Tim. It was a great example of how privileged we are to have a player like Tim Howard."
