The former Manchester United man will go under the knife after scans confirmed anterior cruciate knee ligament damage, and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines

Everton have confirmed that Darron Gibson will require an operation after injuring his right knee on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

The 25-year-old returned to Finch Farm with suspected anterior cruciate ligament damage after being stretchered off in Dublin during his country's 3-1 defeat of Kazakhstan.

Scans confirmed the extent of the problem and Gibson is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, though a timetable for his return has yet to be established.

Gibson has made two appearances for Everton this season, starting his side's Capital One Cup defeat to Fulham in September and coming off the bench in a 3-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
