The England international has praised the Gunners' strength in depth and believes it will be essential if the north London club are to challenge for honours on multiple fronts

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere insists he is not worried by the increase in competition for a place in Arsene Wenger's starting XI and believes it can aid his own development.

The 21-year-old established himself in the Arsenal first team earlier in his career despite the presence of players such as Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song, and says that renewed strength in depth can help the Gunners challenge across multiple competitions.

“When I broke into the team, the situation was similar," he told the Evening Standard. "There were players like Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song and Abou Diaby at the club but this will bring out the best in me and it will bring the best out of the other players as well.

“We still have Santi Cazorla to come back from injury and if we can keep everyone fit, we are going to be real contenders in all four competitions.

“We have not really had this competition for places over the last few years, so we are all excited and we just have to keep it up now."

Wilshere played down fears that he had been left on the bench in Arsenal's 2-0 win over Napoli due to injury, and says the return of Tomas Rosicky has provided Wenger with multiple options to choose from.

"Why was I on the bench? It was just a formation thing because I am feeling fine," he continued.

"Tomas Rosicky is coming back from injury and needed a game. I have played a lot of games recently so I was just happy to get on and help at the end.”
