The England Under-21 starlet struggled to usurp Brendan Rodgers' first-choice pairing of Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard, but has since started each of the Swans' three Premier League ties this term following his £5 million move to south Wales.

Shelvey says he was not forced out of Anfield but felt he needed to leave the club in order to play more matches and develop his game, with first-team chances limited on Merseyside.

“Brendan told me I could stay there and see what happened. It really was my choice. I wasn’t pushed,” Shelvey told the Daily Mail.

“But I wanted to play football. I would hate to be one of those sitting on my money.

“It’s a big thing trying to knock Steven Gerrard out of the team. If you had a really good game the next week you might still be out because the likes of Gerrard are coming back.

“I wanted to play, to get back the status that I used to have. Now I am playing.”
