The defender withdrew from Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of England's 2014 World Cup qualifiers with an injury he picked up in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Manchester United
Johnson picked up the injury following a collision with Patrice Evra in the second half of the Reds’ 1-0 win over United and was substituted, with Andre Wisdom taking his place.
And Liverpool have now revealed the injury has forced him to pull out of England’s two upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
"After being examined by the club's medical staff at Melwood, Johnson is required to rest his ankle this week," a club statement read.
"A further review will then take place to check stability and decide on further management.
"Therefore, Liverpool have not put a timeframe on Johnson's return to fitness at this stage."
England are already without injured United duo Phil Jones and Wayne Rooney, while Steven Caulker, Jack Wilshere, Daniel Sturridge and Jermain Defoe were also all absent from training on Tuesday.
Liverpool have opened the Premier League season with 1-0 wins over Stoke City, Aston Villa and United, with Daniel Sturridge netting all three of the goals.
