The long-serving Frenchman has been handed a £100 million transfer war chest this summer but has so far only brought in France Under-20 international striker Yaya Sanago on a free transfer from Auxerre.
Goal revealed how Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney, Gonzalo Higuain, Marouane Fellaini and Cesc Fabregas, whose fees would all comfortably smash the £20m barrier and Arsenal's transfer record, have all been the subject of serious and sustained interest for the Gunners this summer.
While chief executive Ivan Gazidis was so comfortable with the club's enhanced fiscal muscle that he was content to flex it during a Q&A session with supporters in early June, where he confirmed Arsenal are in a position to match their rivals for transfer fees and wages.
But with the fans' increased hope of a major investment this season, the 63-year-old has warned the Arsenal faithful that another signing may not come any time soon.
"The competition in Europe is very hard at the moment," Wenger told reporters.
"There’s a lot of money and not many players. We work hard but we are not close to signing anybody."
Arsenal are currently in Asia as part of their pre-season preparations, where an Olivier Giroud hat-trick helped the Gunners record a 7-1 win over Vietnam.
