Poland international Lukasz Piszczek was converted into a right-back two seasons ago, and has grown to become one of the most dangerous defenders in the Bundesliga, netting four goals and providing eight assists as BVB retained their league title. His team-mate, Mats Hummels, also impressed in central defence, and could be set to start for Germany in their opening game at Euro 2012.

Bayern centre-half Holger Badstuber has become a fixture for die Mannschaft after carrying his fine club form into the national team. The defender was impeccable for the Germans in crucial games, displaying his immense ability. 23-year-old Spanish left-back Jordi Alba, who racked up 32 Liga games for Valencia, also makes the cut due to his impressive offensive play, and few would bet against him terrorising opposing defences for La Roja.

Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo is set to appear in his final international tournament, and after leading the Old Lady to the Scudetto this season, the nation's hopes of success at Euro 2012 rest on his shoulders. Dutch attacker Rafael van der Vaart may not always start for his club team Tottenham, but whenever Harry Redknapp has given him a chance to shine, he has made a difference, proving to be a crucial player for Spurs in the closing stage of the season.
