France need a player like Xavi, says Giresse

The 59-year-old believes that Les Bleus do not have a playmaker who can set the pace in the midfield, while hailing the quality of the Spain national team
Former France international Alain Giresse believes that Les Bleus lack a player like Spain's Xavi.

The 1998 World Cup winners enter their last group match against Sweden needing a draw to progress to the knockout stages.

Laurent Blanc's side have been in good form in recent matches, but Giresse thinks that Les Bleus lack a player who can set the tone in the midfield.

"We need playmakers like Xavi, someone who can control the flow of the match, and the temperature of the team," the 59-year-old told El Pais.

"We need to have the ball more, because if we lose it, we are not well positioned on the field."

Giresse, who retired from football in 1988, then drew comparisons between Spain's current squad and France's successful team of the 1980s.

"One day, during a meeting in Egypt after the World Cup in South Africa, I met with [Spain head coach] Vicente del Bosque and I told him that Spain played like Michel Platini's France team," Giresse added.

"He agreed with me."
