The two nations will be co-hosting the tournament, and it will mark the first time either country has played host for the AFF Championship

The annual Asean Football Federation (AFF) Council meeting on Saturday confirmed the hosts for the 2016 edition of the AFF Championships.

Myanmar and Philippines, who have both never hosted the competition since its inception in 1996, will be joined co-hosts for the tournament proper.

The AFF meeting at Naypyidaw, Myanmar, where the 2013 SEA Games were also being held, also confirmed that Cambodia will host the qualifying rounds of the 2016 competition.

“It is indeed an honour for Myanmar and with the new facilities that have been built, we are very confident that we can do a very good job,” said Zaw Zaw, the President of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) to the AFF official website.

The head of the Philippines Football Federation (PFF), Mariano Arenata, also expressed his gratitude for the decision, adding: “All I can say is thank you for the trust that has been placed in the PFF and we will work hard to make sure that we deliver a successful event."

The knock-out stages of the competition will remain a home and away affair.

The 2016 AFF Championship will be the 11th edition of the competition. The 2014 Championships will be co-hosted by Singapore and Vietnam, and will mark both nation's fourth time hosting the tournament. Since 2002, the competiton has been jointly-hosted by two nations. Laos will host the qualifying rounds for the 2014 edition.

The AFF Council also agreed on the hosts for the 2014 AFF events. The AFF U16 Preparatory Tournament will be held in Indonesia in September, while Thailand and Malaysia will host the AFF Women's Championship in August, and AFF Futsal Championship in September, respectively.
