The cash rich Thai Premier League side known as the "Oil Millionaires" have set their eyes on the former Middlesbrough midfielder but ultimately failed to convince the 32-year-old.

"My agent offered me to PTT Rayong FC. But, it was Kelantan who progressed faster and finally sealed the deal," Shawky told Goal Thailand. "Kelantan is a great club. They'll participate in the AFC Cup next season and their offer was good. That's why I chose to join them."

Shawky was revealed to the legion of Kelantan fans in an official press conference last week by the President of the Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) Tan Sri Annuar Musa alongside new signings Mohamed Ghaddar, Brendan Gan, Wan Zaharulnizam, Shakir Ali and newly appointed coach Steve Darby.

The former Al-Ahly player has built a reputation as a solid all round midfielder who possess a venomous long shot as evidenced by his noteworthy goal against mighty Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009.
