Harimau Muda will face Japan in the quarter-finals of Universiade 2013 after finishing 2nd in Group C as Great Britain beat Italy 2-0
Harimau Muda A has booked a place in the quarter-final of Universiade 2013 tournament as they finished second in Group C after Great Britain beat Italy 2-0.
Harimau Muda A’s qualification has surprised many and they would not have qualified if Italy managed to beat Great Britain 3-1 in their last game.
Ong Kim Swee's men will have to face defending champion Japan in the quarter-final, which will be played at Trudovye Rezervy Stadium in Kazan.
Malaysia caused an upset in their first game after beating Italy 2-0 with only 10 men for a large portion of the game, but they lost to Great Britain by the same scoreline in their second game. With Algeria withdrawing from the competition, Malaysia finished second above Italy and had a day off having not had to play against Algeria.
According to Bernama, Kim Swee said “I hope the players will put up an inspired performance against Japan. The team has better understanding and will not have problem adapting to the match. Japan are the defending champions but I want the players to match their opponents with determination and fighting spirit.”
