The two teams meet again after one week, and their last match have put more distance between them in Group H of the AFC Cup. Sai Gon are now in second place with seven points, and Selangor are third with only one point after three matches. The Red Giants have a lot to do if they were to overtake Sai Gon and wrench the qualification spot from them, while having to rely on the visitors miraculously slipping up.

However, with Selangor having to play nine matches in jam-packed April, the local news reports are already saying that coach Irfan Bakti is not even going to gun for qualification so that his side can concentrate domestically. He is said to be fielding his reserve players in Tuesday’s match so that his first eleven can be rested for the second leg of the FA Cup quarter-final match this weekend instead.

Sai Gon on the other hand are on the right path to the second round of the AFC Cup. They have distanced themselves from the bottom two teams, and now only require a few more points to advance. In last week’s match at the Thong Nhat Stadium, Sai Gon squandered several good chances and they could have won by a bigger margin, but they were in control of the match nonetheless. The combined forces of their more physical African forwards steamrolled the Selangor defence with ease, and they look to stick with the same tactics should they want to secure their position in the group by winning in Shah Alam.

Fans should expect a game between two sides with very different intentions on Tuesday night. The home team will want to concentrate domestically while minimising the damage that they receive, while the visitors will want to conquer their opponents en route to the second round of the AFC Cup.

  • The top two teams of Group H are on level points with seven whereas the bottom two teams have also collected the same amount of points; one.

  • Sai Gon will be playing only one Group H match at home after this and it will be against Tampines Rovers.

Sai Gon will play their last home Group H match against Tampines Rovers.
