Last night, Selangor travelled to Ho Chi Minh to take on Sai Gon Xuan Thanh FC in the third round AFC Cup tie and fell 2-1 in what was a cagey encounter.
Emeka Ndubuisi Oguwike opened the scoring during first-half stoppage time. Francis Forkey Doe equalised in the second half but an instant reply from Oguwike sealed the deal for the home side.
In the post-match press conference, a dejected Irfan Bakti was quick to congratulate Sai Gon’s victory.
“Sai Gon played well in the first half and made many opportunities to score,” he conceded.
However, the Red Giants’ head coach was disappointed with his side’s display to concede the second goal.
“Selangor tried our best but their second goal made us slump.
“As for the second goal, our defenders didn’t play well - especially Peter Charappan, Irfan said.
As a parting statement, the Selangor boss said: “We are almost out of this league but we will try to gain six points in next three matches.”
The Sai Gon Xuan Thanh coach, on the flipside, was all smiles after the game.
Tran Tien Dai said: “In the first half, our players played with a good attitude, controlled the match and created many chances.
“After the break, when Nsi went out, our young players were embarrassed.
“They are so young and lack experience.”
Looking forward, the Sai Gon coach will be a little more prepared for Selangor in the return match.
“This win will help us reach our goal.
“We have big advantage after this match but we will prepare carefully for next one against Selangor,” he added.
The two teams will meet again on April 9 but this time, it will be on Selangor soil.
