Vietnam football federation to provide financial support for teams participating in AFC Cup

US$10,000 per match is the added incentive being offered by the FA for the Vietnamese clubs to take the competition seriously

Vietnamese clubs taking part in this year's AFC Cup will receive VND200 million (US$10,000) from the Vietnamese Football Federation (VPF) for every match played in the competition.

Lack of financial stability and the need for clubs to take the competition more seriously are behind the reasons for the measures.

Vietnamese clubs who participated in previous editions complained of a lack of support from the V-League organisers and the need to play more games stretching their resources. With the current financial turmoil in the Vietnamese football scene as well taking its toll on clubs, the VPF has taken the steps to provide an incentive for the participating clubs.

Teams that advance to the next stage of the competition will receive VND300 million (US$15,000) for every match played.

Saigon Xuan Thanh, Vietnamese Cup holders, and SHB Da Nang, the V-League champions, are this year's Vietnamese representatives at the AFC Cup.

Da Nang will play in Group G alongside, Kelantan of Malaysia, Ayeyawady United of Myanmar and Maziya of Maldives. Xuan Thanh meanwhile, will be in Group H, with India's East Bengal, S.League champions Tampines Rovers and Selangor from Malaysia.

The AFC Cup group stage will kick-off on March 5 with 32 teams vying for the title.
