Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have not been named in Manchester United's matchday squad for Wednesday's Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Sunderland.
Goal exclusively revealed on Tuesday evening that Van Persie and Marouane Fellaini had returned to first-team training but would have little chance of featuring against Gus Poyet's side at Old Trafford.
Rooney, meanwhile, has also returned to full training following a groin injury. The England international had been sent on a warm-weather break to Egypt with a view to preparing him for United's trip to Chelsea last Sunday, which ended in a 3-1 defeat.
David Moyes, whose side have to overturn a 2-1 first-leg defeat in order to reach the Capital One Cup final where they would face Manchester City, has made five changes following the loss at Stamford Bridge.
Alexander Buttner starts at left-back ahead of Patrice Evra, while Christ Smalling partners Jonny Evans in central defence. In midfield, Darren Fletcher has been handed his fourth start of the season, while Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez are preferred in attack to Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia.
Gustavo Poyet makes two changes to his side following their 2-2 draw at home to Southampton on Saturday. Jack Colback is preferred to Sebastian Larsson in midfield while Jozy Altidore drops to the bench as Steven Fletcher leads the visitors’ attack.
