TEAM NEWS: Van Persie starts but Rooney out for Manchester United, Aguero returns for City

The Dutchman starts for the Red Devils against Shakhtar Donetsk, while the Argentine has recovered in time for Manuel Pellegrini's side's clash with champions Bayern Munich
Wayne Rooney misses Manchester United's Champions League group-stage tie against Shakhtar Donetsk after receiving a kick to the shin during a training session earlier in the week.

Boss David Moyes had hoped Rooney would be able to make the list of substitutes tonight at the Donbass Arena but swelling has prevented the England international from taking part.

However, Robin van Persie returns to the starting eleven for the reigning Premier League champions after coming off the bench at the weekend in the loss to West Brom, supported by the trio of Antonio Valencia, Danny Welbeck, and Tom Cleverley in the trident just behind.

Deadline day-signing Marouane Fellaini and veteran Michael Carrick pair up in the holding midfield roles in Moyes' 4-2-3-1 formation, while centre-backs Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling are flanked by Rafael and Patrice Evra in defence.

David De Gea takes up his usual mantle between the sticks for the Red Devils, with all-Brazilian quadruplet Taison, Alex Teixeira, Douglas Costa, and Luiz Adriano forming the Ukrainian outfit's attack in opposition.

Shakhtar Donetsk: Pyatov; Srna, Kucher, Rakitsky, Shevchuk, Hubschmann; Fernando, Taison, Teixeira, Douglas; Adriano.

Subs: Kanibolotskiy, Krivtsov, Stepanenko, Bernard, Ilsinho, Eduardo, Ferreira.

Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, Cleverley, Welbeck; van Persie.

Subs: Lindegaard, Jones, Giggs, Nani, Young, Kagawa, Hernandez.

Sergio Aguero returns to Manchester City's side for their clash against Bayern Munich, while Micah Richards starts ahead of Pablo Zabaleta at full-back.

The Argentine joins Jesus Navas and the resurgent Samir Nasri in supporting lone striker Edin Dzeko on the evening against the current Champions League holders.

Yaya Toure and Fernandinho are each given the nod, as they were in Saturday's disappointing defeat to Aston Villa, while Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic, and Gael Clichy complete the back line in front of Joe Hart.

Mario Mandzukic starts on the bench for the German giants as Thomas Muller leads the Bayern attack, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos backed up by Philipp Lahm in midfield and Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben out wide.

Rafinha, Jerome Boateng, Dante, and David Alaba form Pep Guardiola's defence as Manuel Neuer starts in goal.

Manchester City: Hart; Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy; Toure, Fernandinho; Navas, Aguero, Nasri; Dzeko.

Subs: Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Lescott, Milner, Garcia, Silva, Negredo.

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Rafinha, Boateng, Dante, Alaba; Lahm; Robben, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Ribery; Muller.
