thumbnail Hello,

Fans from Down Under will hope to be out in force at the festival of football next year after punching above their weight in the early stages of ticket applications

The Socceroos look set to be well-supported at the World Cup in Brazil next year, with Australia among the five countries to submit the most ticket applications in the first hour of sales.

Fans from the United States, the United Kingdom, hosts Brazil and their neighbours Argentina were the others to swamp the FIFA website with requests, as 14,104 applications were submitted in just 60 minutes for the 81,821 tickets available in the first phase of sales.

Australia was pushed out of the top five by Chile after seven hours of sales, by which time more than one million applications had been received, despite supporters not knowing yet where their team will be playing.

Among the tickets available for sale on Tuesday night (AEST) were seats for the opening game and the final, both of which will be at Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana Stadium, with a ballot to be held in October necessary to determine the successful applicants.

"There are vastly more ticket applicants seeking tickets than there are tickets presently available for the general public," FIFA's media office was quoted as saying.

Any remaining tickets from the first phase of sales will be made available on November 5, with a second phase to begin two days after the draw in Bahia on December 6.
