There have been many memorable images throughout the group stages, but one stands out the most: Tim Cahill's monstrous volley to level things almost immediately against NetherlandsIt was a strike that had the Netherlands rocking and everyone else watching in disbelief. Tim Cahill's stunning equaliser for Australia has to be a serious contender for Goal of the World Cup, despite it still being early days. It was that good.
While the Socceroos were plucky in their loss to Chile in their opening day, they were widely regarded as not having much of a chance against the Oranje in their second game. The latter, after all, had dismantled defending champions 5-1 in an awe-inspiring display.
But the Australians paid no heed and got stuck in from the first whistle, as they looked the more impressive side against the Dutch. Indeed, it was somewhat against the run of play when Arjen Robben slalomed past a couple of defenders and fired Netherlands into the lead on 20 minutes.
But Australia refused to be cowed and drew on their Inner Steel to strike back through their Player of Passion - less than a minute later.
Straight from kick-off, the ball was worked to Ryan McGowan near the halfway line on the right. A first time ball into the left of the area fell Cahill's way, where one would have expected him to use his aerial ability and try to head it.
But no. Instead, the former Everton man watched it all the way, let it fall over his shoulder before unleashing a corker that crashed in off the bar. It was a magnificent first-time volley and it had the crowd gasping in amazement.
It was Cahill's second goal of the tournament and the talisman had proved his worth to Australia, despite them eventually losing 3-2 to go home early. He had provided the Gillette Moment of Steel in Group B and will leave Brazil with his head held high.
