How Ghana’s WC opponents fared in Wednesday’s friendly matches: Portugal and Germany win, USA beaten

Germany recorded a slim win against Chile, but Portugal were the biggest winners on the night after posting an emphatic 5-1 win over Cameroon

As the World Cup clock continues to tick unabated, preparations for the tournament are entering the final gears as the globe awaits another edition of the tournament.

On Wednesday, almost all the 32 participants took to the field to engage opponents in friendly matches ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana was not left out as the Black Stars made a trip to Podgorica to face Montenegro.

The four-time African champions fell to a 1-0 defeat after Dejan Damjanovic converted an early penalty in less than 30 seconds into the start of the game.

Ghana’s other Group G opponents at the World Cup were equally in action on Wednesday.

USA finally took on Ukraine after uncertainties surrounded the kick-off. The Yankees fell to a 2-0 defeat to the Ukrainians who scored in each half.

Elsewhere, Arsenal midfielder, Mezut Ozil set up Mario Gotze to score the only goal for Germany against Chile. The Bayern Munich player scored the goal in the 16th minute as Joachim Leow’s side finished the match as 1-0 victors.

Led by Ballon d’or holder, Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal easily brushed aside Cameroon 5-1.

Ronaldo himself grabbed a brace, while the other three goals were shared among Fabio Coentrao, Raul Meireles and Edinho.

In June, Ghana, Portugal, USA, and Germany will be fighting for the two slots in Group G at the 2014 World Cup.
