In what was an ultimately disappointing round of first-leg matches for English sides, only Chelsea came out of the first 90 minutes of their last-16 tie undefeated.
Fernando Torres' early strike in Turkey, the only goal a Premier League outfit managed over 360 minutes of football across the four matches involving English teams, helped secure a 1-1 draw for Jose Mourinho's men and puts them in a strong position going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Near neighbours City did not fare much better either, albeit against stronger opposition. Barcelona were ultimately too hot to handle for Manuel Pellegrini's side, with strikes from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves leaving City with a mountain to climb when they visit Camp Nou.
And what of Arsenal. The Gunners were paired with favourites for the competition Bayern Munich when the draw was made back in December and the Bundesliga champions were a class above the north Londoners in the first leg.
A superb strike from range from Toni Kroos and a second from Thomas Muller at the Emirates Stadium have put Pep Guardiola's side in command of the tie but the Gunners can draw hope from their 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena last season.
So what do you think? Is Champions League progression now out of reach for the likes of Manchester United, City and Arsenal? Could Didier Drogba come back to haunt Chelsea or are they effectively through following their draw in the Turk Telekom Arena?
