The English Premier League has thrown up a few surprises already this season, even at this early juncture in November.
Aston Villa shocked Arsenal 3-1 right on the opening day, while also stunning Manchester City 3-2 at home subsequently. Manchester United's 2-1 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion is another result that sticks out, with Goal Singapore featuring all three in our Goal Singapore Monday Top 5 list.
Over the weekend just ended alone, there were three major upsets already. Sunderland shocked City 1-0, Newcastle stunned Tottenham by the same scoreline and Chelsea needed a late, contentious penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw at home against West Brom.
A majority 67% of Goal Singapore readers picked out the Black Cats' remarkable win over cash-rich City as the biggest upset, as Phil Bardsley's well-taken finish condemned Manuel Pellegrini's men to a second successive away league defeat. It was also their fourth loss of the season, leaving them in eighth place.
Meanwhile for Gustavo Poyet, it was his and Sunderland's second win of the season, having experienced a crushing 4-0 loss to Swansea when he took over the reins in October. While they are still 19th in the table, it was their second win on a trot after victory over high-flying Southampton last week and the Uruguayan has reason to be optimistic for the future.
Elsewhere, 17,5 % went for Newcastle's win against Spurs, where Tim Krul put on a one-man show to deny the hosts after Loic Remy had given them the lead. The remaining 15.5% chose Chelsea's draw with West Brom, where Ramires was embroiled in diving allegations after he hit the deck to win the late spot-kick.
