In this week’s EPL Top 5, Goal Singapore looks at five youngsters who also made goal-scoring debuts for their clubs.

5. Federico Macheda, Manchester United

Federico Macheda wrote himself into Manchester United folklore with his injury time goal in his debut against Aston Villa in the 2008/2009 campaign, a result many believed to have been the turning point of the season for the Red Devils’ title triumph. Trailing 2-1 after 60 minutes, Sir Alex Ferguson substituted the then unknown 17-year-old and he set up the equaliser for Cristiano Ronaldo in the 80th minute before curling in an injury time effort to give United a very crucial three points.

4. Alan Smith, Leeds United

The former England international and current MK Dons player is famed for his combative and hard working nature in the middle of the park. But before Smith was converted into a central midfielder at Manchester United, he was a deadly striker for Leeds United, so much that he scored on his debut with his first touch of the ball after coming on as a substitute against Liverpool at Anfield in 1998. The 18-year-old’s goal cancelled Robbie Fowler’s opener, and Leeds went on to win the game.

3. Robbie Keane, Wolverhampton Wanderers

In 1997, Robbie Keane burst onto the Premier League scene at the tender age of 17 for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was thrown into the first team action against Norwich City, and responded with two well-taken goals, the first being a wonderful 25-yard volley that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. The Irishman was extremely highly rated and Coventry City soon bought the youngster, who, as you may guess, also scored a brace on his debut for the Sky Blues.

2. Michael Owen, Liverpool

It is no surprise that Michael Owen makes the list of debut goal scorers, considering his reputation as one of the most lethal strikers to have graced the Premier League, especially in his younger days. Unsurprisingly, Owen scored on his debut as a 17-year-old in 1997 against Wimbledon. But the youngster turned out to be the only bright spark for Liverpool that night as they lost the must-win game 2-1, handing the title to rivals Manchester United.

1. Alan Shearer, Southampton

In 1988, an unknown 17-year-old by the name of Alan Shearer made his professional debut as a substitute against Chelsea. But it was his full starting debut two weeks later that got the whole world to sit up and take note. The youngster introduced himself to the world by scoring a hat trick to help the Saints beat a title-challenging Arsenal team 4-2 at The Dell. At 17 years and 240 days, Shearer became the youngest player to score a hat trick in the top division. Oh and by the way, Shearer scored on his debuts for Blackburn and England too.
