Mhlongo created Platinum Stars opening goal and was an inspirational leader in the centre of defence throughout the MTN 8 final
South Africa Player of the Week
Benson Mhlongo
AGE 32
TEAM Platinum Stars
Orlando Pirates
(1)1-1(3) Platinum Stars

Mhlongo, playing against his former side, turned back the clock with an imperious performance in defence for Platinum Stars, as Dikwena shocked Orlando Pirates by winning the MTN 8 final. The captain was inspirational at the back, stifling Pirates talented attacking players with a mixture of guile and experience. Mhlongo was not only active in defence, as he provided Robert Ng'ambi with a deft flick to set up the opening goal for Platinum Stars. His controversial statements at the end of the match aside, Mhlongo was one of the most committed players on the pitch for Dikwena, as they sealed a historic victory.

Congratulations to Benson Mhlongo's 47th South Africa Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Tokelo Rantie - Bournemouth

Rantie may have been on the losing side for Bournemouth, but showed some mesmerising skills in setting up his side's only goal of the game on Saturday. Bournemouth went on to lose 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers, but Rantie is beginning to make his mark in the Championship.

Thabo Matlaba- Orlando Pirates

Brought on as a substitute, Matlaba scored another thunderbolt from range to equalise in the MTN 8 final. The stinging drive swerved past Mpontshane, who stood rooted to the ground as the ball crashed into the back of his net. Matlaba will be given more opportunites to shine due to Patrick Phungwayo season-long injury.
Issa Sarr - Platinum Stars

Named man-of-the-match after the MTN 8 final, Sarr was a powerful midfield force for Dikwena throughout the match. Contending with the likes of Andile Jali, Sarr held his own in the middle of the park, providing Stars with a pillar of strength in the midfield.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by South Africa, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
