South Africans Abroad: Mokotjo stars for PEC Zwolle

Kamehelo Mokotjo scored his first goal of the season for new side PEC Zwolle, while Bongani Khumalo netted a late winner for Doncaster Rovers during a mixed weekend for SA stars


Tokelo Rantie came off the bench during Malmo's Uefa Europa league match against Swansea City on Thursday, with his side only able to muster a 0-0 draw with the Premier League side. Swansea qualified for the next round with a 4-0 aggregate win.

The Bafana Bafana marksman was in action again on Sunday, playing the full ninety minutes during Malmo's 1-0 win over Halmstad. Malmo are currently second on the Allsvenskan log, with 38 points from 19 games. 

Sive Phelekeza played 15 minutes against Qaraberg in Uefa Europa league qualification on Thursday, with his side Gefle losing 2-0 on the night. Phelekeza did not make an appearance from the bench on Sunday, during Gefle's 2-1 win over Mjallby. Gefle sit in 10th place on the Allsvenskan log with 21 points from 19 games.

In the Superettan, Bradley Ralani played during Lanskrona's 2-0 loss against Degerfors last Monday. The striker will be on the pitch again tonight, when his 11th placed side face 9th placed Angelholm in another second division encounter.

Ayanda Nkili played 84 minutes for Superettan leaders Orebro on Wednesday, during his side's 3-1 win over Jonkopings Sodra. Orebro are in action again tonight and will attempt to build their lead at the summit of the table, when they face GIF Sundsvall.
Ricardo Nunes was involved in another league thriller on Sunday, when his club side Zilina fought back to secure a 4-4 draw with Nitra in the Slovakian league. Zilina are currently 4th after five games this season.

Earlier in the week, Nunes came off the bench in the 81st minute during his team's 1-1 draw with Rijeka, which was not enough to secure Uefa Europa League qualification for his side.


18-year-old Brondy midfielder Lebogang Phiri played 79 minutes on Sunday against Viborg in the Danish league. Brondby fought back from being a goal down on two occasions, securing a 2-2 draw with a late equaliser.  

Brondby have been unable to recover from their poor start to the league season and sit in 10th spot on the league standings, with only goal difference separating them from the relegation zone.


In England, Bongani Khumalo made his mark for Doncaster Rovers in the Carling Cup last week, scoring a dramatic late winner to secure a spot in the next round of the cup for his new team. The defender's 89th minute header was enough to secure victory, while Dean Furman also played the full ninety minutes of the cup tie.

19-year-old Kgosi Nthle continues to impress for Peterborough United, starting both of his side's fixtures last week. Peterborough defeated Colchester United 5-1 in the Carling Cup and were free-scoring once again on Saturday, defeating Notts County 4-2 to end the week in second place on the League One standings. 

Steven Pienaar played during Everton's 1-0 loss against La Liga outfit Valencia in the International Champions Cup, with his side set to kick-off their Premier League campaign against Norwich City on Saturday.


In the Netherlands, Thulani Serero remained on the bench for Ajax Amsterdam during their disappointing 3-2 Eredivisie loss against AZ Alkmaar.

In contrast, Kamehelo Mokotjo not only started for PEC Zwolle but also scored his first Eredivisie goal for the side against Heracles on Sunday. Following a disappointing season on the sidelines for Feynoord in 2013-2013, Mokotjo will be motivated to display his talents for his new side.


Anele Ngcongca's Genk faltered against Standard Liege on Sunday, losing 2-0 at home and falling to 6th spot in the Belgian League standings. Ngcongca played the entire match, but was unable to stop Ezekiel and M'Poku finding the back of the net for Standard Liege.

Darren Keet would have been disheartened after letting in three goals on Friday night, when his side played to a dramatic 3-3 draw with Ayanda Patosi's Lokeren. A late penalty strike secured a draw for Keet's Kortjik, who have four points from three games this season.
