The Spaniard is under pressure to deliver a trophy with a Serie A title challenge having failed to materialise but he says his first season at San Paolo has already been a success
The Partenopei were expected to mount a serious Serie A title challenge this season but they have been unable to keep pace with leaders Juventus and second-placed Roma, while they also bowed out of the Champions League at the group stage.
Consequently, it has been argued within the Italian press that Saturday's clash with Fiorentina will have a significant bearing on how Benitez's first season at the San Paolo is judged by club president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
However, the Spanish coach insists that this campaign has already been a success.
"Winning the Coppa Italia would be important for the growth of the club," Benitez stated. "The season has been very positive with a new formation and new players.
"Saturday's match will not decide the value of the season. The lion's share of the work has already been done.
"We really want to win, but in the event of a defeat it wouldn't change my outlook on the season.
"If we do win it will be even better, but if we don't nothing will change as far as my future is concerned."
