The 29-year-old has been left out of Cesare Prandelli's 25-man roster to play France on Wednesday evening as a result of his red card in Sunday's Rome derbyRoma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has been dropped from the Italy squad after punching Stefano Mauri in his side's 3-2 defeat to Lazio on Sunday.
The 29-year-old, who could be close to a move to Manchester City, with the Giallorossi willing to listen to offers for him, would have been certain to feature, but coach Cesare Prandelli has decided to leave him out as a punishment.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United full-back Davide Santon has been called up following an impressive run of performances, and Roma youngster Alessandro Florenzi has also been invited to the senior squad after catching the eye for the Under-21s.
