thumbnail Hello,

The German champions were dumped out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion by Real Madrid, who romped to a 4-0 second leg win in the semi-final

They were unbeatable last season. Under Jupp Heynckes, Bayern Munich swept all before them in 2012/13, winning the treble in style with their swashbuckling football.

When the German stepped down as the end of the campaign, many wondered who his successor would be. Step forward Pep Guardiola, who was ready to return to management after leaving Barcelona, with whom he enjoyed four glorious trophy-laden years.

Under the Spaniard, Bayern was expected to get even better. But criticism of Guardiola's style was at its heaviest when they went down to a shocking 4-0 loss at home on Wednesday morning to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, having already lost the first leg 1-0. That ensured the Bavarians would not be able to repeat their treble feat.

Many accused Bayern of being a worse team under Guardiola, who introduced his own style and tactics to Bayern - not always to success. They dominated the German league well enough, wrapping up the Bundesliga title in record time, but were found wanting on the European stage.

However, Goal Singapore readers were sympathetic to Guardiola's situation, with 40% indicating that the defeat was just a one-off and could have happened to anybody. An almost equal number, 36.9%, did feel that Bayern has got worse under Guardiola and that they would have never lost so heavily if it was last season. The remaining percentage were unsure and willing to give Bayern the benefit of the doubt by indicating this season could be one of transition and that Guardiola will come back stronger with them.

Bayern still have the German cup final to contest against Borussia Dortmund, which will at least ensure them a domestic double if they triumph.
