thumbnail Hello,

The defensive stalwart who most recently captained Johor Darul Takzim in the Malaysian Super League is the biggest omission after being sent off in his last game

Singapore coach Bernd Stange has announced his 20-man squad to face Oman in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on March 5 but will have to make do without suspended defender Baihakki Khaizan.

The 30-year-old featured in the Malaysian Super League side's last match against Kedah FA on February 18, captaining his team to a 2-0 win.

Baihakki also started in Singapore's 3-1 home defeat to Jordan on January 4, where he was sent off in the first-half for lashing out against Mossab Al-Laham, incurring the wrath of Stange in the post-match press conference for losing his discipline despite his experience.

Meanwhile, fellow JDT team-mate Hariss Harun will be making the trip to Oman, along with JDT II's Shahril Ishak.

Home United captain Juma'at Jantan who has seen a resurgence in form has been handed his first call-up under Stange. The 30-year-old is joined by team-mate Ismail Yunos.

Warriors FC fullback Zulfadli Zainal Abidin who was handed his first, and so far only, international cap by the current Singapore coach also makes the team.

Reigning S.League champions and recent Charity Shield victors, Tampines Rovers, oddly do not have any of their players in the new Singapore squad. Shaiful Esah, Shahdan Sulaiman and in-form goalkeeper Hyrulnizam Juma'at, who was recently chosen as Goal's Southeast Asia Player of the Week, have all been left out.

LionsXII still account for the largest representation with 11 players, including likely Baihakki replacement Afiq Yunos in the squad.

Stange, speaking via a media statement, emphasised the need to focus on player development over results.

"Oman has one of the best teams in Asia, and they have done very well to qualify for the 2015 Asian Cup," he said.

"On top of that, we know that they will not be resting on their laurels so we have to play at our highest level. This is also a golden opportunity especially for our younger players to gain invaluable experience playing against quality opponents, and this can only help to develop them both on the physical and mental fronts.

"We will try to achieve a good result in Oman but the result is not the most important thing. All the players have to show that they deserve to represent Singapore. I look forward to another interesting and challenging encounter with Oman”

The match will be played on March 5, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman.
