The striker penned a new deal worth £300,000 per week until June 2019 and will see out his career at Manchester United, having twice asked to leave the club before

It seemed like Wayne Rooney got what he wanted in the end, as he signed a new contract at Manchester United on Saturday.

The deal sees him earning £300,000 per week until June 2019, after which he will become a club ambassador when upon retirement. The 28-year-old responded with a stunning volley to seal United's 2-0 win at Crystal Palace less than 24 hours later, bringing the Red Devils up to sixth in the Premier League table.

The contract can be seen somewhat as a coup for the England striker, who has asked to leave the club twice before. The first happened in 2010, while the second was just last season, as written by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in his autobiography. Both times, it has resulted in a new, better deal for Rooney.

Goal Singapore readers gave their thoughts in a poll on the issue and the majority believe Rooney is not worth his new contract, with 45.3% indicating that the club were bending over backwards to make him happy. It is believed that Rooney has been given privileged access to the club's transfer plans in an attempt to convince him of their ambitions, while he is also likely to be made captain after Nemanja Vidic leaves at the end of the campaign.

A further 32.8% held the opposite view, believing that Rooney is a the club's talisman and the Red Devils were right to do everything they could to keep him. Manager David Moyes has already insisted that it was vital to tie the striker down, as he seeks to build on a disappointing debut season.

The remaining 21.9% are on the fence and feel he has to prove himself worthy of being the highest-paid player at the club.

While Rooney looks likely to overhaul Sir Bobby Charlton's club record of 249 goals, whether he will be regarded as a United legend is less certain.
