thumbnail Hello,

For the first time in 12 years a Singapore official will be absent at the biggest sports competition in the world, with all AFC reps coming from West Asia, Australia and Japan

The 2014 Fifa World Cup will feature four refereeing teams from the AFC region with two Iranian officials acting as supporting staff, but there will be no representatives from Southeast Asia.

This will mark the first time since 2002 that Singapore officials have been left out of the tournament roster. Jeffrey Goh served as an assistant referee to Malaysia's Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh at the 2010 edition in South Africa, while Shamsul Maidin was the main official in Germany four years prior, breaking George Suppiah's 32-year record of being the only Singaporean to officiate at the biggest sports competition in the world.

Suppiah passed away in December 2012 and was in charge of the Poland and Haiti match in West Germany in 1974. He was also the first Asian official to take charge of a World Cup match.

This year's main Asian representatives in Brazil will be from Uzkbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, Bahrain and Australia.

Oceania, who do not have a representative team competing at the World Cup, will provide three officials. New Zealand duo Peter O'Leary and Jan Hendrik Hintz, being joined by Fiji's Ravenish Kumar.
