A friendly between Singapore and Malaysia is reportedly in the works to mark the unveiling of the new sports facility
The Bernama, Malaysia's national news agency, reported on Saturday that one of the games the Malaysia national team, or Harimau Malaya, will play in 2014 is a "match against Singapore to mark the opening of a new stadium there in May".
However, there have been no concrete details from both Football Associations regarding such a match-up, which will be held at the new 55,000-seater National Stadium located in the Sports Hub.
The construction of the Sports Hub started in 2011 at the site of the old National Stadium, with the new stadium set to feature a retractable roof and comfort cooling for spectators. It has been set for a second-quarter of 2014 opening.
The idea of bringing in a top club team like Manchester United or Real Madrid has been mooted in the past, but it appears that will not be feasible and there wil be a Causeway Derby instead.
When contacted by Goal Singapore, Football Association of Singapore (FAS) refused to confirm the claim from Malaysia, remaining tightlipped on the match details as a spokesperson replied: “We are currently working out the details of the match to be played at the opening of the Sports Hub and will announced the details at an opportune time,"
